UD Baseball Drops Fifth Straight Game

NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware baseball team (1-8) lost its fifth straight game dropping a 6-1 decision to Villanova (3-8). It was the Wildcats third straight victory over Delaware, including a 3-2 victory over the Hens in Delaware's only home loss last season.

Villanova jumped out to a 3-0 lead by scoring three runs in the first two innings. Villanova starting pitcher Aaron Krawiec pitched seven scoreless innings against the Hens to keep them at bay until the Wildcats got one run in the eighth and two in the ninth to pull away. Delaware's only run came off a wild pitch from Brian Manning which plated freshman Vince Vukovich in the bottom of the ninth.

Delaware was led by Vukovich who went two for four with a run. Kevin Mench went 0-2 drawing two walks for the Hens. Vic Sage gave Delaware their best outing of the season pitching six innings and giving up three runs as the starter. Reliever Jeff Romond came in and pithced three innings giving up three runs. Villanova was led by Nick Piantek who went two for five with two RBI and a homerun and Dave Pizzini who went four for five with an RBI. Krawiec moved to 2-0 pitching seven scoreless innings, while Brian Manning came in and pitched two innings giving up one run. Delaware will be in action on Saturday when they take on Providence in a doubleheader in a 12 noon start at the Delaware Diamond.
