UD Baseball defeats Wilmington College 3-2
NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware baseball team
(8-11) won its seventh straight game defeating Wilmington
College for the 11th straight time 3-2 on Sunday in a
non-league contest at the Delaware Diamond.
Delaware starter Vic Sage and Wilmington College
starter Chris Viel battled in a pitchers duel throughout the
game. All the runs came in a two inning span with Wilmington
starting off the scoring in the top of the third on a Randy
Hottes double that scored Jamie French and a Rick Brockell
single that scored Hottes. The Blue Hens struck back in the
bottom of the third on an RBI single by Ken Giles
which scored Frank DiMaggio. Delaware finished off
the scoring for both teams in the bottom of the fourth when
Matt Voltz, who was Viel's catcher in high school,
hit an RBI single with two outs to tie the score at two.
Catcher Jamie McSherry, who was in a 2-34 slump
coming into the game, delievered an RBI double which plated
Vince Vukovich to put the Hens up for good. Sage
closed out the game not allowing a hit to a Wildcat batter
from the fourth inning until two outs in the ninth
inning.
Delaware was led by Sage who knotched the fourth
consecutive complete game victory for a Blue Hen pitcher
going nine innings, giving up five hits, two runs and
striking out six. Voltz and McSherry were both one for three
with one RBI and Giles was one for four with an RBI. Second
baseman Andrew Salvo continued his hot hitting going
two for three on the day, while Wilmington College held
Kevin Mench hitless as he went 0-4 on the day.
Delaware pitching has now given up two runs or less in eight
out of its last nine games.
Wilmington College was led by Chris Viel who pitched
eight innings giving up eight hits, three runs and striking
out three in his first loss of the season. Randy Hottes led
the hitting going one for four and knocking in one RBI and
scoring a run for the Wildcats who had an eight game
unbeaten streak snapped by the Hens.
