UD Baseball losses second straight to Coastal Carolina 9-6

 

The Delaware baseball team (0-2) dropped its secondstraight game on its South Carolina trip to Coastal Carolina whoimproved to 9-2 on the season.Coastal Carolina got two RBI each from Joe Zangari, Chris Carter and Ricardo Ayala. Starting pitcher Scott Sturkie gave up three runs in 6 1/3 innings while walking two batters and striking out seven Hens. The Chanticlers held 1998 All-American Delaware outfielder Kevin Mench to an 0-4 day, and 1-9 over the last two games. Coastal Carolina jumped out to a 4-0 lead on Delaware starting pitcher Vic Sage who gave up seven runs on 10 hits in four innings.

The Hens rallied in the fifth inning to cut the score to 4-3 behind a sacrifice fly from Andrew Salvo to score Vince Vukovich who led off the inning with a triple and then a Peter Maestrales two-run homerun, which was second in two days. However, the Chanticlers struck back in the bottom of the fifth with five runs on six hits to move the lead out to 9-3 as they held on for the victory. Maestrales had his second homerun in the last two days as he hit a homerun in the fifth inning for the Hens. Ken Giles also went 3-3 for Delaware with two RBI and one run scored. Sage took the loss for the Hens in his first start of the season. Delaware left 11 runners on base, and have stranded a combined 21 runners on base in its first two games of the season. Delaware faces Richmond on Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
