Five University of Delaware Field Hockey Players Honored on All-Colonial Athletic Association Teams

RICHMOND, VA -- Five University of Delaware field hockey players have been named to the All-Colonial Athletic Association team, including CAA Defensive Player of the Year honoree Amanda Warrington (Lewes, DE/Cape Henlopen - at right).

In addition to Warrington, also honored for the Blue Hens were sophomore goalkeeper Megan Allen (Virginia Beach, VA/Kempsville) and senior back Erica LaBar (New Castle, DE/William Penn) on the first team and senior backs Jessi Balmer (Telford, PA/Christopher Dock) and Leah Geib (Schwenksville, PA/Souderton) on the second team. In addition, Molly Burke (Southbury, CT/Pomperaug) was selected to the All-Rookie team.

The individual awards were broken up into three categories which included Coach of the Year, Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, and Rookie of the Year. The All-Conference selections were then broken up into three teams consisting of a first team, a second team, and an All-Rookie team.

Warrington ended the 2004 season tied for the team leader in goals with nine and game-winning goals with three. She recorded three assists in the regular season for 21 points and added one more assist in the CAA tournament. She was named to the All-Tournament team and was also named as having it's Most Outstanding Performance. Prior to the 2004 season Warrington started all 21 of her games as a freshman recording only one goal and one assist.

LaBar finished the 2004 season tied with Warrington with nine goals and three game-winners but added a goal and an assist in the CAA Tournament. She is currently second on the team with 24 points after finishing the regular season with 21. LaBar is a two-time STX/NFHCA All-Mid-Atlantic-Region selection as well as a third-team National All-American in 2002. She is one of three captains on this years squad and will be one of two Blue Hens to represent the school in the North/South Senior All-Star Game held at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, NC.

Allen completed her regular season leading the CAA in shutouts with nine. She allowed only 23 goals throughout the regular season making 94 saves for a .805 save percentage. In the first week of play Allen was named CAA Player of the Week for the first time in her career after a successful rookie season that garnered her a Rookie of the Week honor in 2003. Allen was a key contributor in the Hens win over Old Dominion allowing only one goal and allowing only two goals all weekend.

Balmer ended the 2004 season with six goals and one assist for 13 points. She is also one of three captains on the 2004 squad and was named as a Third Team National All-American in 2003. Most recently she was named to the CAA All-Tournament team after posting one goal and one assist.

Geib completed the 2004 season with six goals and seven assists for 19 points. She was named CAA Player of the Week and named to the CAA All-Tournament team after posting another goal to give her 21 points. The third of the three captains, Geib will be the second member of this years squad to represent the school in the Senior All-Star Game along with LaBar.

Burke ended the 2004 season as a consistent nominee for Rookie of the Week for Delaware. She recorded one assist on the season assisting on a Lauren Carr goal against Temple University. She has played consistent midfield for the Hens this season and has started all of Delaware's regular season games. In the CAA Championship Tournament Burke started the first game against Old Dominion before being held back against Hofstra in the championship game.

Delaware finished the 2004 regular season 13-6 before winning the CAA championship for the first time in school and conference history. It is only the second time in the conference's 20 year history that a third-seeded team has gone on to win the championship. The NCAA selection show will be nationally televised on CSTV on Tuesday, October 9 at 7 p.m. It can also be viewed online at www.collegesports.com.
