17 Delaware Defeats Drexel 3-1 to
Highlight Senior Day
NEWARK,
DE (October 24, 2004) -- Leah Geib scored
the game-winner for the No. 17 University
of Delaware field hockey team, which
defeated Drexel University 3-1 Sunday at
Rullo Stadium in the final home game of
the regular season.
The
win, the fourth straight for Delaware,
improves the Hens' record to 12-6 overall
and 4-2 in the Colonial Athletic
Association while the Dragons drop to 7-10
and 3-3 in the conference.
Delaware
honored four graduating seniors, who
played their final home game at Rullo
Stadium, prior to the game. The class
includes All-American Jessi Balmer
(Telford, PA/Chistopher Dock),
All-American Erica LaBar (New
Castle,DE/William Penn), Academic
All-American Leah Geib
(Schwenksville,PA/Souderton), and Lauren
Carr (West Chester, PA/Downingtown - at
right).
The
Blue Hens reached the back of the net
early in the first half as Katie Evans
(Newtown Square, PA/Villa Marie Academy)
recorded her third goal of the season
assisted by Amanda Warrington (Lewes,
DE/Cape Henlopen) at 7:44. Geib followed
suit at 19:54, tallying her sixth goal of
the season on a one-timer blast from Carr
off a penalty corner.
Delaware
held the Dragons to only two shots and two
penalty corners in the first half, taking
12 shots of their own and amassing six
penalty corners. Drexel goalkeeper Katie
Dougherty recorded five saves, receiving
help from Rachael Bloemker and Crystal
Barnes, who each notched defensive saves
in the first half.
The
Dragons recorded their first goal of the
day at the 47:38 mark to cut the Delaware
lead to one, as Amanda Mouser scored on a
backhanded shot from Emily
Horvat.
The
Blue Hens countered when Carr caught a
rebound following Geib's shot at 55:15 to
score her eigth goal of the season and
push the Delaware advantage to
3-1.
Delaware
goalkeeper Megan Allen (Virginia Beach,
VA/Kempsville) recorded two saves while
Dougherty finished the game with eight.
The Dragons were outshot by the Hens
18-4.
Delaware
hits the road to play its final game of
the 2004 regular season on Saturday,
October 30 at noon against Towson at
Minnegan Stadium.
