American Jessi Balmer Scores Twice Leading
No.17 Delaware Field Hockey Past Hofstra,
3-2
NEWARK,
DE-- (October 22, 2004) All-American Jessi
Balmer recorded her second overtime
game-winning goal of the season at 71:27
to lift the No. 17 University of Delaware
field hockey team past Hofstra, 3-2,
Friday night at Rullo Stadium.
Delaware
imporves to 11-6 overall and 3-2 in the
Colonial Athletic Association, while the
Pride drops to 10-7 overall and 1-4 in
league play.
The
Blue Hens scored the game-winner just 1:27
into the extra session as Balmer (Telford,
PA/Christopher Dock) scored off an assist
from fellow All-American Erica LaBar (New
Castle, DE/WIlliam Penn).
Delaware
opened the scoring as Balmer recorded her
fifth goal of the season and first of the
game at 18:52 off an assist by Katie Evans
(Newtown Square, PA/Villa Marie Academy)
(right). The Blue Hens were forced to
defend against six penalty corners in the
first half while taking only two of their
own and were outshot by the Pride, 4-3,
but still took the one-goal lead into the
half.
Delaware
recorded a goal in its fifth straight half
with 25:54 remaining as Leah Geib
(Schwenksville, PA/Souderton) scored her
fifth goal of the season off a pass from
Evans to give the Blue Hens a two-goal
lead.
However,
the Pride roared back by scoring a pair of
unanswered goals to tie the game. The
first goal came with 19:45 left, as
two-time Colonial Athletic Association
Rookie of the Week Pemba Ramdoo picked up
a rebound off a Kara McKeaney shot and
found the backof the cage to record her
sixth goal of the season and cut the Blue
Hen lead to one. With 13:59 to play Doni
Melissa Jantzen tied the score at 2-2 with
her ninth goal of the season.
Delaware
out-shot the Pride, 12-5, in the second
half and had a 9-2 advantage in penalty
corners.
Delaware
ended the game outshooting the Pride,
16-9, as Megan Allen (Virginia Beach,
VA/Kempsville) recorded four saves in goal
while Hofstra goalkeeper Jessica
Copperthwait stopped nine
shots.
Delaware
faces Drexel on Sunday, October 24 at 1
p.m. at Rullo Stadium in its final home
game of the 2004 season.
