All American Jessi Balmer Scores Twice Leading No.17 Delaware Field Hockey Past Hofstra, 3-2

NEWARK, DE-- (October 22, 2004) All-American Jessi Balmer recorded her second overtime game-winning goal of the season at 71:27 to lift the No. 17 University of Delaware field hockey team past Hofstra, 3-2, Friday night at Rullo Stadium.

Delaware imporves to 11-6 overall and 3-2 in the Colonial Athletic Association, while the Pride drops to 10-7 overall and 1-4 in league play.

The Blue Hens scored the game-winner just 1:27 into the extra session as Balmer (Telford, PA/Christopher Dock) scored off an assist from fellow All-American Erica LaBar (New Castle, DE/WIlliam Penn).

Delaware opened the scoring as Balmer recorded her fifth goal of the season and first of the game at 18:52 off an assist by Katie Evans (Newtown Square, PA/Villa Marie Academy) (right). The Blue Hens were forced to defend against six penalty corners in the first half while taking only two of their own and were outshot by the Pride, 4-3, but still took the one-goal lead into the half.

Delaware recorded a goal in its fifth straight half with 25:54 remaining as Leah Geib (Schwenksville, PA/Souderton) scored her fifth goal of the season off a pass from Evans to give the Blue Hens a two-goal lead.

However, the Pride roared back by scoring a pair of unanswered goals to tie the game. The first goal came with 19:45 left, as two-time Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Week Pemba Ramdoo picked up a rebound off a Kara McKeaney shot and found the backof the cage to record her sixth goal of the season and cut the Blue Hen lead to one. With 13:59 to play Doni Melissa Jantzen tied the score at 2-2 with her ninth goal of the season.

Delaware out-shot the Pride, 12-5, in the second half and had a 9-2 advantage in penalty corners.

Delaware ended the game outshooting the Pride, 16-9, as Megan Allen (Virginia Beach, VA/Kempsville) recorded four saves in goal while Hofstra goalkeeper Jessica Copperthwait stopped nine shots.

Delaware faces Drexel on Sunday, October 24 at 1 p.m. at Rullo Stadium in its final home game of the 2004 season.
