14 Delaware Field Hockey Team Falls to No.
8 Old Dominion, 3-2
NEWARK,
DE-- (October 10, 2004) The No. 14
University of Delaware field hockey team
fell short to No. 8 Old Dominon on Sunday
at Rullo Stadium by a 3-2
score.
The
Blue Hens are yet to defeat the Monarchs
in conference play in five meetings and
are now 2-2 overall in the Colonial
Athletic Assosciation.
Lauren
Carr (West Chester, PA/Downingtown - at
right) began the game's scoring in the
first half at 27:09 on a crossing pass
from Stephanie Swain (Middletown,
DE/William Penn) who recorded the assist,
giving the Hens a 1-0 halftime
lead.
The
Monarchs retaliated in the second half
with two consecutive goals as Caroline
Nichols recorded her sixth of the season
at 38:35 on a penalty corner. She was
assisted by Dana Sensening tying the score
at one. Katie Claxton recorded her first
of two goals on the game at 48:34 with the
assist going to Darcy Pinchbeck giving Old
Dominion a 2-1 lead.
Delaware
tied the score back up as Stephanie Swain
scored her first of the season unassisted
at 53:22.
Goalkeeper
Megan Allen (Virginia Beach,
VA/Kempsville) stopped a fast break late
in the second half that resulted in a
Monarch penalty shot. Despite the shot
going wide, Old Dominion took the lead
minutes later as Katie Claxton postedher
second goal of the game at 57:13
unassisted.
Allen
posted four saves on the game while Old
Dominion Goalkeeper Mary Cate Gordon
tallied three. The Monarchs outshot the
Hens 10-6 as Delaware drops to 0-6 when
outshot on goal by any
opponent.
Delaware,
which is now 8-6 (2-2 CAA) on the season,
returns to action on Friday, October 15 as
the Hens face non-conference opponent La
Salle at Rullo Stadium. The game is
scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
