No.
17 Delaware Cruises Past Hofstra, 5-1, To
Win CAA Field Hockey Championship and
Advance To NCAA
Tournament
WILLIAMSBURG,
VA (November 7, 2004) -- Blue
Hen senior Lauren Carr (West Chester,
PA/Downingtown) scored twice while senior
Jessi Balmer (Telford, PA/Christopher
Dock) and junior Amber Deimler (Hershey,
PA/Hershey) each added a goal and an
assist as the No. 17 University of
Delaware field hockey team defeated
Hofstra, 5-1, in the Colonial Athletic
Association Tournament Championship Sunday
afternoon on the campus of William &
Mary.
The
Blue Hens (15-6) earn the league's
automatic bid to the NCAA Division I
Tournament and advance to the tournament
for the third time in school history,
joining the 1982 and 1988 squads that each
captured East Coast Conference titles. The
16-team field will be announced Tuesday
night at 7 p.m. and will be broadcast live
by College Sports Television (Directv
Channel 610).
Senior
Erica LaBar (New Castle, DE/William Penn)
gave the third-seeded Blue Hens the early
lead by converting a penalty stroke for
her 10th goal of the year with 20:06
remaining in the first half, but
fourth-seeded Hofstra (13-8) quickly
answered as Kara McEneaney scored a
penalty corner goal off assists from Sara
Gonzalez and Sekayi Liburd to tie the game
at 1-1 with 18:02 left in the
half.
Carr
gave Delaware, which had defeated Hofstra
3-2 in overtime in the teams' regular
season meeting, the lead for good at the
8:26 mark of the half by tipping a cross
from sophomore Katie Evans (Newtown
Square, PA/Villa Maria Academy) past Pride
goalkeeper Jessica Cowperthwait. Deimler
then gave the Blue Hens a two-goal lead as
she converted a cross from Balmer with
5:39 remaining for her third goal of the
season, and Delaware took the 3-1 lead
into halftime.
Balmer
scored an unassisted goal, her seventh of
the year, with 22:13 left in the game to
make it 4-1, and Carr capped the scoring
with a goal off a Deimler assist with
10:04 to play for her team-high 11th goal
of the season.
The
Blue Hens, who upset eight-time defending
league champion Old Dominion, 2-1 in
overtime, on Saturday in the semifinals,
dominated the championship game, holding a
15-6 shot advantage and an 8-4 edge in
penalty corners. Delaware sophomore
goalkeeper Megan Allen (Virginia Beach,
VA/Kempsville) needed to make just one
save in the Blue Hen cage, while
Cowperthwait stopped nine shots for
Hofstra.
"I
am ecstatic, and really excited for our 22
players", said 12th-year head coach Carol
Miller. "This team has worked extremely
hard since preseason began on August 8,
and our seniors really came through for us
today as they have all season."
Sophomore
Amanda Warrington (Lewes, DE/Cape
Henlopen), who assisted on Carr's overtime
goal in Saturday's win over the Monarchs,
was named the CAA Tournament Most Valuable
Player and was joined on the
all-tournament team by teammates Balmer,
Carr, and senior Leah Geib (Schwenksville,
PA/Souderton). Anna Davis and Shannon Karl
of William & Mary, Sara Gonzalez,
Sekayi Liburd, and Kara McEneaney of
Hofstra, and Caroline Nichols and Dana
Sensenig of Old Dominion were also
included on the team.
Delaware,
which has now won seven straight games,
will play its NCAA First Round game on
Saturday at one of four sites, with the
second round on Sunday at the same
location as Satuday's game.
