of Delaware Field Hockey Falls To
Second-Ranked Maryland,
4-3
NEWARK,
DE-- (September 19, 2004) The 14th-ranked
University of Delaware field hockey team
fell to second-ranked Maryland, 4-3, at
Rullo Stadium on Sunday as the Terrapins
scored the final three goals to pull out
the win.
The
Blue Hens began the scoring three minutes
into the first half with an unassisted
goal by Lauren Carr (West Chester,
PA/Downingtown) off a save by Maryland
goalie Christina Restivo.
The
Terrapins answered back less than two
minutes later as Colleen Barbieri scored
the first of her two goals in the contest
off an assist from Jackie
Ciconte.
Leah
Geib (Schwenksville, PA/Souderton) scored
the first of her two goals in the game for
Delaware off an assist from Erica LaBar
(New Castle, DE/William Penn) to give the
Hens a 2-1 halftime lead. Geib then scored
again off an assist from Katie Evans
(Newton Square, PA/Villa Maria Academy),
again off a penalty corner, to put
Delaware up 3-1 with 27:01
remaining.
However,
Maryland countered with three straight
goals to take the lead. Barbieri made it a
one-goal game by scoring her second of the
game off an assist from Lauren Powley with
22:46 to play. Janneke Van Leeuwen then
tied the game with an unassisted goal at
the 19:24 mark, and Emily Beach scored the
game-winner with 14:20 on the
clock.
Blue
Hen goalkeeper Megan Allen (Virginia
Beach, VA/Kempsville) recorded seven saves
while Christina Restivo stopped five for
the Terps, who out-shot Delaware,
16-11.
The
loss drops Delaware to 4-3 on the season,
while Maryland remains undefeated at
9-0.
Delaware will host Temple University on September 22 at 7 p.m. at Rullo Stadium.
