Hens Fall to Unbeaten North Carolina 5-1
in Field Hockey

NEWARK,
DE-- Senior Kelsey Keeran scored three
goals, including two within a nine-minute
span early in the contest, as unbeaten
North Carolina defeated the University of
Delaware 5-1 in a non-league field hockey
game Friday afternoon at Rullo Stadium.
Keeran,
the Tar Heels' leading scorer with seven
goals for the season, scored just five
minutes into the game and added her second
goal at the 13:56 mark as North Carolina
moved out to the big lead and never looked
back. She completed the hat trick with the
game's final goal with 14:16 left to play.
North
Carolina improved to 5-0 on the season
while the Blue Hens, who had won three
straight, fell to 3-2 on the season. The
game was the first between the two
perennial top 20 teams since
1997.
Delaware
got its only goal from senior All-American
Jessi Balmer (Christopher Dock/Telford,
PA), who scored her first goal of the
season unassisted with 16:35 left to play
to cut the lead to 4-1.
Anne
Marie Janus and Rachel Dawson added the
other North Carolina goals while Laura
Douglas and Laree Beans each contributed
two assists each. North Carolina held a
16-4 advantage in shots and a 9-1 edge in
corners.
Delaware
goalkeeper Megan Allen recorded five
saves.
Delaware
will take a week off before returning to
action next Friday, Sept. 17, to host
Saint Joseph's at 7 p.m. as part of a
five-game homestand at Rullo Stadium.
