Carr's Overtime Goal Lifts No. 17 Delaware Field Hockey Over No. 8 Old Dominion, 2-1 in Overtime, in CAA Tournament Semifinals

WILLIAMSBURG, VA (November 6, 2004)-- Senior Lauren Carr (West Chester, PA/Downingtown) scored off a cross from Amanda Warrington (Lewes, DE/Cape Henlopen) with 2:58 remaining in the first overtime period to give the No. 17 University of Delaware field hockey team a 2-1 win over eight-time defending league champion Old Dominion in the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament Semifinals Saturday afternoon on the campus of William & Mary.

The Blue Hens, who were the third seed in the tournament and improved to 14-6, advance to their second consecutive CAA Touranment Final on Sunday, when they will face fourth-seeded Hofstra at 1 p.m, also in Williamsburg, VA. The Pride, which fell to Delaware, 3-2 in overtime, in the teams' regular season meeting, upset top-seeded William & Mary, 1-0 in overtime, in the day's first semifinal.

Eighth-ranked Old Dominion (13-7) struck first with 3:13 remaining in the first half on an unassisted goal by Caroline Nichols, but Delaware answered with just 17 seconds left in the period when Leah Geib (Schwenksville, PA/Souderton) collected a rebound off a shot by Erica LaBar (New Castle, DE/William Penn) and scored to tie the game.

After an evenly-played but scoreless second half, Carr scored her ninth goal of the season off a cross from Warrington to give the Blue Hens the dramatic overtime win. Megan Allen (Virginia Beach, VA/Kempsville) made four saves in the Delaware goal, while Mary Cate Gordon also stopped four shots for Old Dominion, which out-shot the Blue Hens 12-8 and held a 13-4 edge in penalty corners.

The Blue Hens, who have qualified for their conference tournament in each of the last nine seasons, will look to advance to the NCAA Division I Tournament for the third time in program history and the first time since 1998. The 1982 Delaware squad also advanced to the tournament, while four Blue Hen teams appeared in the AIAW National Tournament.

The win over Old Dominion was the first ever by Delaware, which entered this afternoon's game 0-4-1 all-time against the Monarchs. Old Dominion defeated Delaware, 5-0, in last season's championship game and posted a 3-2 victory at Rullo Stadium in this year's regular season matchup.
