Ball State 3, Delaware 2

MUNCIE, IN -- Sally Northcroft's goal with :30 remaining in regulation completed her second hat trick in three days and gave Ball State a 3-2 win over Delaware in field hockey action Sunday.

Delaware (2-1) took a 1-0 lead with 15:23 remaining in the first half on Mia Callahan's first of two goals on the day. Callahan scored off of a feed from Saturday's hero, Rachel Barger. Barger's assist gave her seven points for the opening week (2g, 3a).

Northcroft, who became Ball State's all-time leading scorer on Friday with a four-goal effort in beating Northwestern, tied the game with 5:31 left before halftime on a direct corner. She converted another direct corner with 14:55 remaining to give the Cardinals a 2-1 lead.

Delaware tied the score when Callahan converted Delaware's only shot of the second half. Her second tally of the game and the season tied the game, 2-2, with 3:52 remaining.

However, Northcroft scored on a back-handed reverse shot in the closing seconds for the game-winner.

Ball State, which won its fourth straight game and raised its mark to 4-2 on the season, outshot Delaware, 25-9, for the game. The Blue Hens held an 8-4 advantage in shots at halftime, before Ball State outshot Delaware, 21-1, over the final 35 minutes.

Kelly Ottati recorded 13 saves for Delaware in net. She also got help from Jodi Byrd's two defensive saves. Jen Myers recorded five saves for Ball State.

The Blue Hens, who could crack the Top 20 when the initial poll of the season is released this week, travel to Philadelphia to face Temple Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. before hosting national power Iowa in their home-opener next Sunday at 12 noon.
