BOSTON -- Jane Rogers scored on a
breakaway with 4:45 remaining as top-seeded Boston
University defeated No. 4 seed Delaware, 2-1, in the
semifinals of the America East Field Hockey
Tournament.
Following a failed Delaware penalty
corner, Boston University played the ball quickly up the
field for a 3-on-1 breakaway. Danielle DeCoste found Rogers,
who was initially stuffed by Delaware goalkeeper Kelly
Ottati 20 yards away from the goal. The ball popped out from
under Ottati's arm and Rogers tapped the ball towards the
goal for the game-winner and her 12th of the
season.
Delaware, 9-12, had taken a 1-0 lead in
the first half on Megan McGuin's third goal of the season.
McGuin, a native of Newark, DE, scored off of a feed from
Rachel Barger during a scurry in front with 9:38 left in the
first half.
The Terriers, 16-5 and ranked No. 14 in
the NFHCA Top 20 poll, tied the score with 18:19 remaining
in the second half on Tina McDavitt's goal of a penalty
corner.
The loss was Delaware's eighth against a
team ranked in the current Top 20. Delaware is also now
winless in seven games at Nickerson Field and 0-6 against
the Terriers at Nickerson.
Boston University will face the winner of
Friday night's New Hampshire-Northeastern game. The title
game is slated for Sunday at 1 p.m. The winner will receive
an automatic qualifier into the NCAA Tournament.
