NEWARK, DE -- Quan Nim's unassisted goal
with the 27:16 remaining in the second half broke a 1-1 tie
as No. 10 Iowa spoiled the home-opener for No. 20 Delaware,
3-1, in field hockey action Sunday.
Nim scored off of her own rebound in a
scurry in front of the net to give the Hawkeyes (6-0) a 2-1
lead.
Anita Miller added an insurance goal with
18:08 to play to give Iowa a two-goal lead. Miller broke in
and fired a shot past Delaware keeper Kelly Ottati
from the left wing.
The teams traded goals off of penalty
corners in the first half. The Hawkeyes scored first just
over 13 minutes into the game when Tiffany Fodera found the
net off of a corner.
Delaware (3-2) tied the game when Juli
Byrd scored off of a Blue Hen penalty corner with 5:19
remaining in the half. It was her team-leading fourth goal
of the season. Rachel Barger and Jen Fotiou
assisted on the tally, extending Barger's point-streak to
five consecutive games.
Iowa outshot Delaware, 18-9, for the
game, including a 12-5 advantage in the second
half.
The Blue Hens continue their tough
stretch of schedule, playing five ranked opponents in six
games, Wednesday night at No. 4 Maryland. Game time is 7:30
p.m.
