BETHLEHEM, PA -- The University of
Delaware field hockey team could not have asked for a better
opening game in blanking Lehigh, 5-0, Wednesday afternoon at
Goodman Field.
Juli Byrd opened the scoring 7:59
into the game off of a feed from Megan Fortunato to give
Delaware a 1-0 lead. Fortunato recorded the helper on
Delaware's second goal just over five minutes later, passing
to Jen Fotiou for the score and a 2-0
advantage.
Mia Callahan made it a 3-0
Delaware lead just 40 seconds later with Sara Hills and
Rachel Barger assisting.
Barger and Fotiou set up Delaware's next
goal with 20:35 remaining in the second half as senior
Melissa Molloy scored her first collegiate goal to
make it 4-0.
Megan McGuin's goal off of a feed
from freshman Stephanie Dorsch closed out the
scoring.
Delaware dominated play throughout,
outshooting Lehigh, 16-0. With the win, Delaware coach
Carol Miller is now 6-1 in openers at Delaware and is
7-0 against Lehigh. The Mountain Hawks have not scored
against Delaware in each of the last four
meetings.
Delaware heads west to Muncie, IN for two
games beginning Friday, when it will take on Northwestern
Friday at 1 p.m. at Ball State. The Blue Hens will face Ball
State Saturday at 1 p.m.
