Delaware vs. Princeton
Sept. 29, 1999
Princeton 2, Delaware 1

NEWARK, DE -- Hilary Matson's goal with 15:06 remaining in the first half proved to be the difference as No. 16 Princeton defeated Delaware, 2-1, in field hockey action at Rullo Stadium Wednesday night.

The loss was Delaware's fifth straight and dropped them to 3-6 on the season. Four of the five losses have come against teams ranked in the Top 20.

Matson's goal off of a rebound broke a 1-1 tie in what was becoming an offensive battle.

Princeton, 4-1, had scored first with 18:32 remaining in the first half when Kellie Maul took a pass from Ilvy Friebe and played it off of Delaware goaltender Kelly Ottati. Kristen Skorupski came up with the ball off of Ottati's pads and found the net for her team-leading fourth goal to give Princeton a 1-0 lead.

Delaware, however, answered just 1:57 later when Mia Callahan scored her fourth goal of the season. Megan Fortunato fired a pass from the middle of the field to Rachel Barger on the right wing. Barger then hit a blast towards the front of the net, which Callahan redirected into the net to tie the game.

However, Matson's tally 89 seconds later would break that tie.

The teams settled down after that, although Delaware missed on two great scoring chances. In the first half, Kate Johnson had a one-on-one breakaway with Princeton goaltender Kelly Baril. Baril made a great play, sliding to knock the ball away from Johnson before she could get off a shot.

Delaware also had a goal called back late in the second half off of a penalty corner because it was too high of a hit.

The Blue Hens will host No. 9 James Madison Sunday at 12 noon at Rullo Stadium.
