NEWARK, DE -- Erin Shaklee's first
collegiate goal with 9:59 remaining broke a 2-2 tie as
Delaware topped Ball State, 4-2, Sunday at Rullo Stadium in
the final game of the 2000 Blue Hen Tournament.
Shaklee, a freshman from Severna Park,
MD, scored off a pass from freshman Meghan O'Meara to
break the tie. Juli Byrd, a junior from Pocomoke, MD,
scored her second goal of the day on a penalty stroke with
just 27 seconds remaining to ice the win.
The Blue Hens (1-2) jumped all over Ball
State in the first half, only to see the lead disappear
early in the second half. Delaware scored four minutes into
the contest when Byrd connected on a penalty corner with
help from Megan Fortunato and Kelly
Coyle.

The Blue Hens extended the lead to 2-0
with 7:21 left in the half on freshman Jessica
Breault's second goal in as many games.
However, the Cardinals (2-1) responded
quickly in the second half. Monika Rhode scored from the
right wing just 18 seconds into the second half to cut the
margin in half.
Ball State continued to pressure the Blue
Hen defense. Colleen Conway tied the score, 2-2, with 22:35
remaining. The Cardinals had a chance to take the lead with
just over 13 minutes remaining, but a shot by Conway hit the
post.
In her first collegiate appearance,
sophomore Steph Judefind picked up the win in goal.
Judefind, a native of Wilmington, DE and graduate of Concord
HS, played the final 28:45 and recorded eight saves to hold
off the Cardinals.
Delaware outshot Ball State, 29-15,
including a 18-3 margin in the first half. The Blue Hens
also held a 14-3 margin in penalty corners. However, Ball
State goalkeeper Susan McDowell, a native of Elkton, MD, was
outstanding in front of family and friends. McDowell
recorded 14 saves, including nine during Delaware's first
half barrage.
The win snaps a six-game losing skid for
Delaware dating back to last October.
Delaware will host pre-season No.
1-ranked Maryland Friday at Rullo Stadium at 7
