NEWARK, DE -- Senior Megan Fortunato had a goal and an assist for the second consecutive game as the University of Delaware held on for a 3-2 win over Lafayette in field hockey action Tuesday night at Rullo Stadium.

Fortunato's consecutive game feat is the first by a Blue Hen since current UD assistant coach Rachel Barger recorded both a goal and an assist in consecutive games in September 1998.

Delaware got on the board quickly. Fortunato dished to Juli Byrd just 1:07 into the game as Byrd connected on her team-high seventh goal of the season and a 1-0 Delaware lead.

The Blue Hens (5-8) extended that to 2-0 when Fortunato, a native of Willow Grove, PA, picked up a loose ball at midfield, dribbled the rest of the way and beat Leopard goalkeeper Amy Cohen with 25:39 left in the first half.

Lafayette (5-7) got on the board just past midway through the first half. With 17:28 remaining, Meredith Hahn scored unassisted to cut the margin in half, 2-1.

Delaware took a 3-1 lead when freshman Jessica Breault scored with 8:56 left in the first half. Breault, a native of Southbury, CT, scored her fourth goal of the season.

Lafayette pulled back within one 5:25 before intermission when Megan Monahan scored off a penalty corner with helpers from Hahn and Carolyn Rodichok.

However, after the wild first half, the defenses took over in the second half. The two teams managed just five shots combined over the final 35 minutes.

Stephanie Judefind picked up the win in goal for Delaware with three saves. Cohen had four saves for Lafayette.

Delaware will host Towson Friday afternoon at Rullo Stadium in a key America East tilt. Game time is 3:30 p.m.
