Delaware 4, Towson 0

October 13, 2000

Juli Byrd

NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware used a first-half offensive explosion to move past Towson, 4-0, in field hockey action at Rullo Stadium Friday afternoon to move into a tie for first place atop America East.

The Blue Hens raised their record to 6-8 overall, 3-1 in America East and moved into a tie temporaily with New Hampshire. The Wildcats (8-5, 3-1) host Vermont (5-6, 1-2) Saturday at 3 p.m. in Durham, NH.

Delaware got on the board with 16:59 remaining in the first half when Megan McGuin scored her second goal of the season. Juli Byrd's initial shot was stopped by Towson starting goalkeeper Betsy Crossman. The ball, however, trickled behind Crossman to a waiting McGuin, who tapped the ball home.

The Blue Hens scored again just 3:02 later when junior Megan Fortunato found freshman Jessica Breault for her sixth goal of the season. Fortunato's assist gave her seven points in the last three games -- all Delaware wins.

Byrd made it a 3-0 lead when she scored on a penalty stroke with 8:52 remaining in the first half. It was the team-leading eighth goal of theseason for the native of Pokomoke, MD.

The Blue Hens greeted Towson back-up goalkeeper Lauren Worl unkindly early in the second half. Just 32 seconds in, Kate Johnson scored on a sprawling, head-first redirection of a Megan O'Meara pass that Worl had no chance on. It was the third goal of the season for the Holland, PA native.

Meanwhile, Delaware goaltenders Steph Judefind and Andrea Grasso combined on the shutout. Judefind, who has been starting in place of Grasso after suffering a pair of concussions earlier this month, recorded four saves in 54:31, before Grasso returned to the line-up for the final 15:31.

Delaware will travel to Hofstra, a 3-2 loser to Drexel on Friday, for a Sunday 1 p.m. game.
