NEWARK, DE -- Juli Byrd recorded her 50th career point and Megan Fortunato had a goal and an assist as Delaware topped Vermont, 4-2, in America East field hockey action at Rullo Stadium Sunday afternoon.

The Blue Hens (4-8, 2-1 America East) snapped a three-game losing streak with the win. Vermont, which had won four of its last five, fell to 4-6, 1-2 in conference play.

Megan McGuin started the scoring just 4:15 into the game when she redirected a Fortunato blast to give the Hens a 1-0 lead.

Fifteen minutes later the Blue Hens took a 2-0 lead on an unassisted goal by Katie Phillips.

However, Vermont cut that in half quickly. Just 12 seconds later, Sara Mercanti scored an unassisted goal to make it a 2-1 game.

That score held up until the second half thanks in big part to Catamount goalkeeper Holly Colberg. Colberg recorded 12 saves for the game, eight of those in the first half and several of which were acrobatic.

The Blue Hens took control of the game in the second half on unassisted goals by Fortunato and Byrd at 23:05 and 15:59 remaining in the game, respectively. Byrd, a junior from Pocomoke, MD, moved into 16th place on the Delaware career scoring list as she now has 51 career points with 22 goals and seven assists. It was her team-leading sixth goal this season.

Vermont closed to within the final margin when Kristan MacDonald scored on a deflection of a Becky Daley blast with 13:51 remaining. However, that is as close as the Catamounts would come.

Delaware goalkeeper Stephanie Judefind, starting for the second straight game in place of the injured Andrea Grasso, picked up the win and recorded three saves in the process.

Delaware will continue its five-game homestand Tuesday night when it plays host to Lafayette at 7 p.m.
