NEWARK, DE -- First-half goals by Jamie Bolen and Jessica Jiao lifted William & Mary to a 2-1 win over Delaware in field hockey action at Rullo Stadium Sunday afternoon.

After both teams missed on early chances, including a Delaware penalty stroke from Kim Wagaman that hit the crossbar, the Tribe (2-0) scored first. Midway through the half, Bolen scooped up a loose ball in front and scored her second goal in as many days to give William & Mary a 1-0 lead.

William & Mary extended the lead to 2-0 when a Tribe centering pass was deflected in front by a Delaware defender. However, it went straight to Jiao who batted the ball home for her second goal in as many days.

Delaware got one back 4:07 before half when Juli Byrd scored off of a penalty corner. Byrd, a junior from Pocomoke, MD who scored eight of her team-high nine goals off of corners last year, got assists from Kelly Coyle and Megan Fortunato on the play that cut the deficit to 2-1.

However, William & Mary dominated play in the second half. The Tribe held Delaware without a shot in the second half and did not allow the Blue Hens to hold possession inside the 25-yard line until the closing minutes.

Making her first collegiate start, redshirt-sophomore Andrea Grasso was strong in net for Delaware. Having played just three minutes her first two collegiate seasons, Grasso recorded 10 saves for the Blue Hens (0-1) to keep them within striking distance.

Nicole Whitfield recorded two saves in picking up the win for William & Mary.

Delaware continues its season-opening five-game homestand next Saturday when it hosts Syracuse in the Blue Hen Tournament beginning at 1 p.m.
