Byrd moves past sister, but Albany gets the upset

Juli Byrd passed her sister, Jodi, and moved into ninth place on the UD all-time scoring list.

ALBANY, NY -- A pair of second half goals by Angie Stegel led University of Albany to a 3-1 upset win over Delaware in America East field hockey action Friday afternoon.

The Blue Hens (7-4, 2-3 America East) had jumped out to a 1-0 lead when Juli Byrd scored off a penalty corner just 1:43 into the game with assists from Kelly Coyle and Jenn Fotiou. The goal gave Byrd 78 points for her career and moved into ninth place on the UD all-time scoring list, past her sister, Jodi, who had 77 from 1995-98.

Albany (4-7, 2-3) tied the game with 14:07 left in the first half when Lisa Burline scored off a feed from Amy DiMicco.

However, Albany took over in the second half on Stegel's goals at the 25:09 mark and again ith 11:05 left.

Megan Akstin had 10 saves for Albany, while Stephanie Judefind had 18 saves for Delaware.

The Blue Hens will look to get back on track Sunday at Vermont beginning at 12 noon.
