Freshman Phenom
Lifts Hens into Title Game
Leah Geib's two
goals lifted the Blue Hens to a championship date
with Northeastern

BOSTON, MA -- Freshman Leah Geib's two-goal
performance may have produced the biggest Blue Hen tally in
10 years.
Having never won a game in six previous
America East tournament appearances, including season-ending
losses to Boston University four of the last five years,
third-seeded University of Delaware knocked off the No. 2
seeded Terriers, 2-1, Friday night at Sweeney Field in
America East semifinal action.
It was the first two-goal game of Geib's
career and gave the Schwenksville, PA native (Souderton Area
HS) 10 goals for the season. Her second goal of the game
with just over 13 minutes left in the second half was the
difference as the Blue Hens advanced to the America East
final for the first time ever.
The win snapped an eight-game losing skid
against Boston University and lifted the Blue Hens into the
America East championship game on Sunday against top-seeded
Northeastern. The Huskies, ranked No. 19 in this week's
NFHCA Top 20 poll, defeated No. 4 seed Maine, 2-1, in
Friday's first semifinal.
The Terriers (8-11) waisted no time in
jumping out to a 1-0 lead. Felicia Cappabianca scored off a
Meredith Long feed just 3:58 into the game to give Boston
University an early advantage.
Delaware tied the game 10:46 before half
when Geib scored out of a scramble in front of the
net.
The Blue Hens took the lead with 21:59
left in the game after a penalty corner. Juli Byrd took the
initial shot off the penalty corner sequence, which was
deflect by a Boston University defender. Geib then knocked
the ball past Terrier keeper Susan Harrington and gave
Delaware a chance to win its first conference title since
1990.
Heidi Hibshman recorded two saves for
Delaware in earning the win. Harrington recorded three saves
in a losing effort.
