Blue Hens Fall For
First Time on West Coast

PALO ALTO, CA -- Elizabeth Harkins
scored on a two-on-one break with 9:49 left in overtime to
lift the University of California to a 2-1 non-league field
hockey victory over the University of Delaware Tuesday night
at Stanford University.
California (1-1) sent the game into
overtime on a goal by Erin Robinson with 24:13 left in
regulation then won the game on Harkins' goal less than six
minutes into the extra session.
Delaware, playing its third and final
game on its season-opening West Coast trip, fell to 2-1 on
the season. The Hens will return to action Sept. 8 at
Rutgers.
After a scoreless first half, Delaware
got on the board first just four minutes and 21 seconds into
the second half when All-Region standout Juli Byrd
scored her first goal of the season off a feed from
freshman Jessi Balmer.
California tied the game at 1-1 six
minutes later when Robinson scored off a penalty corner off
assists from Danya Sawyer and Harkins.
Harkins then scored the game-winner in
overtime off a feed from Amber Stockstill.
Delaware outshot the Golden Bears 12-10
with starting goalkeeper Heidi Hibschman posting
three saves. Cal goalkeeper Emily Rowlen posted six saves to
get the victory.
