Lafayette stuns
Blue Hens in double-overtime
EASTON, PA -- The University of
Delaware field hockey team could not finish off Lafayette
College (9-3) Wednesday afternoon, falling, 3-2, in
double-overtime at Metrzgar Field.
After holding a 1-0 lead at halftime,
Kelly Coyle scored minutes into the second period to
provide the Hens with a two-goal lead.
Lafeyette's defense contained the UD
offense the rest of the way, limiting America East goal
leader Juli Byrd (10 g) to just two shots. The
Leopards tied the match with two goals in the final 15
minutes of regulation to force overtime.
UD outshot Lafayette 4-1 in overtime, but
one shot was all that Lafayette needed. Melissa Farrand
scored the game-winner with 5:42 left in the second
overtime.
Goaltender Heidi Hibshman stopped
seven shots in the losing effort for Delaware
(9-6).
Delaware field hockey looks to get back
on track when it takes on Hofstra in America East action at
Rullo Stadium Friday night at 7 p.m.
