Byrd Scores Hens' Lone Goal as UD Falls to Top Ranked Terps

Juli Byrd scored Delaware's only goal

COLLEGE PARK, MD -- Colleen Barbieri scored two goals to lead top-ranked University of Maryland to a 4-1 non-league field hockey victory over the University of Delaware Wednesday night at the Artificial Turf Field.

Maryland, coached by former Delaware All-American Missy Meharg, improved to 13-3 on the season while the Blue Hens had a two-game win streak snapped to fall to 11-7.

Maryland, the No. 1 ranked team in the latest National Field Hockey Coaches Association Top 25 poll, was the highest ranked opponent ever for the Blue Hens. Delaware tied then No. 2 ranked West Chester 1-1 during the 1987 season.

The Terrapins, who won the 1999 NCAA Division I title, jumped out to a 3-0 lead and never looked back in posting the win over the Blue Hens.

Dina Rizzo scored an unassisted goal nine minutes and 24 seconds into the game to give Maryland what proved to be a 1-0 halftime lead. Maryland turned it on in the second half as Barbieri scored her first goal on a rebound off UD goalkeeper Stephanie Judefind's pads four minutes into the second half and added her second score just under five minutes later for a 3-0 lead.

Delaware scored its only goal of the game with 25:22 left to play when Juli Byrd (Pocomoke/Pocomoke, MD) scored off a direct corner on assists from Kelly Coyle and Jenn Fotiou. Byrd leads Delaware and the America East Conference with 13 goals this season. It was also the 39th goal of her career.

Maryland, which outshot Delaware 21-4 and held a 5-3 advantage in corners, closed out the scoring when Megan Kelly took a feed from Emily Boyer and scored with 2:09 left to play.

Delaware will continue action this Saturday when the Hens host Drexel at Rullo Stadium. With a victory, the Hens will clinch one of four spots in the upcoming America East Tournament Nov. 2-4 in Boston.
