Blue Hens fall short in quest for first conference title since 1990

Kim Wagaman scored her sixth goal of the season for Delaware.

BOSTON -- Kim Wagaman staked the University of Delaware to an early lead, but it was not enough as the Blue Hens lost to No. 19 Northeastern in the America East final, 4-1, Sunday afternoon at Sweeney Field.

Wagaman, a junior from Oley, PA, scored unassisted with 9:41 left in the first half to give Delaware (13-8) a 1-0 lead. It was the sixth goal of the season for Wagaman.

However, that lead lasted just 35 seconds for the third-seeded Blue Hens. America East Rookie of the Year Liane Dixon tied the game off a feed from Fior Arrindell.

The Huskies, which defeated Delaware during the regular season, 2-1, en route to a perfect 9-0 conference mark, took a 2-1 lead when Sarah Broderick scored off a Kelly Williams pass with 5:30 left before halftime.

Northeastern (16-6) picked up a pair of insurance goals in the second half. The first came 6:54 into the second half when Broderick fed Sara Webber for a score. The Huskies, which did not qualify for the America East Tournament last year for the first time ever, tacked on another goal when Webber and Broderick hooked up again with 4:16 left.

"We had a great season," said Delaware coach Carol Miller. "It just wasn't our day today. Northeastern just put out our fire. We came out very strong emotionally, but they just kept coming at us. I truly believe our players gave everything they had today."

The Blue Hens are not expected to be in contention for an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament when the field is announced on Tuesday at 8 p.m. EST. Northeastern receives an automatic bid into the tournament's field of 16.
