Freshmen Lead the Way for Blue Hens in Opener

Kim Wagaman had two assists

PALO ALTO, CA -- The University of Delaware field hockey team opened up the 2001 athletic season for the Blue Hens with a decisive 4-0 victory over University of the Pacific at Stanford University Saturday afternoon.

The Blue Hens (1-0) got three of their goals from freshmen, including two from Lauren Carr (Downingtown/West Chester, PA), on their way to the season-opening victory. Pacific (0-1) managed just two shots and did not attempt a penalty corner during the game.

Delaware will continue its three-game West Coast swing when the Hens take on Stanford Sunday afternoon at 6 p.m. Eastern time. The Hens will close the trip with a game at California Tuesday afternoon.

The Hens, coming off an 8-12 record in 2000 but expected to battle for an America East playoff berth, won their season opener for the fifth time in the last six years. Delaware downed Pacific 5-1 in 1986 in the only other meeting between the two teams.

Delaware got on board with 13:14 left in the opening half when Carr, the 2000 West Chester Area Player of the Year, took a feed from fellow freshman Leah Geib (Souderton/Schwenksville, PA) to give the Hens a 1-0 lead.

The Blue Hens scored three more times in the second half as Geib scored off an assist from junior Kim Wagaman (Oley Valley/Oley, PA) just 10 minutes into the half and senior Jenn Fotiou (Oley Valley/Oley, PA) scored an unassisted goal just five minutes later. Carr capped the scoring with her second tally of the game off another feed from Wagaman with just 46 seconds left to play.

Delaware goalkeepers Andrea Grasso and Stephanie Judefind combined for the shutout, facing just two shots the entire game.
