Byrd Scores Twice as Hens Rout Host Rutgers

 

Juli Byrd scored twice in a 5-1 win

PISCATAWAY, NJ -- Senior Juli Byrd scored twice in the first half as Delaware dominated Rutgers, 5-1, in field hockey action Saturday afternoon.

Byrd's two goals raised her career total to 29 for her career and three on the young season. The native of Pocomoke, MD now has 65 career points as she closes in on UD's All-Time Top 10 in scoring.

Both of Byrd's tallies came off penalty corners. The first score came just 3:33 into the game with help from Kelly Coyle and Jess Breault.

Byrd's second score of the game came with 7:47 left before intermission off another penalty corner. It came with help from Coyle and Kim Wagaman to make it a 2-0 lead.

Delaware (3-1) made it 4-0 when sophomore Erin Shaklee scored on an unassisted tally with 25:14 remaining and junior Stephanie Dorsch scored her second career goal when she found the cage unassisted 2:26 later.

Wagaman scored her first collegiate goal at 16:21to give the Blue Hens a 5-0 advantage before Rutgers got on the board in the closing minutes.

Sophomore Stephanie Judefind recorded three saves in the win.

Delaware, which was coming off a 10-day layoff outshot Rutgers, 10-6.
