PHILADELPHIA -- Juli Byrd scored
her fourth goal of the season with 6:27 remaining in the
first half and it stood up as the game-winner as University
of Delaware topped No. 17 Temple, 2-1, in field hockey
action Wednesday afternoon.
The Blue Hens, 4-1 overall, got on the
board just 3:26 into the contest when Kim Wagman scored her
second goal of the season off a feed from Byrd.
Temple, 4-2, tied the game with 20:25
remaining in the first half when Virginia Gonzalez scored
off a Kelly Walsh feed.
However, Byrd, a senior from Pocomoke, MD
scored off a direct corner with helpers from Jess Breault
and Kelly Coyle to give Delaware a 2-1 lead at the
intermission. Byrd now has seven points (3g, 1a) in the last
two games.
Stephanie Judefind made the lead stand up
from there, recording three saves in the win.
After Delaware's game with Ohio
University slated for Saturday was cancelled earlier today,
the Blue Hens will next be in action Friday, September 21 at
Maine. The America East opener gets underway at Alfrond
Stadium at 7 p.m.
