NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware
field hockey team got its first home victory of the season
with a 3-1 defeat of Virginia Commonwealth on Sunday
afternoon at Rullo Stadium.
The Blue Hens (9-5, 3-3 America East)
smothered the VCU offense limiting the Rams to just three
shots on the game, as Delaware snapped a five-game winless
streak at Rullo Stadium that dated back to last
season.
Sophomore Jessica Breault (Southbury,
CT/Pomperaug Regional) who saw her first action since a hand
injury sidelined her on September 30, scored her first goal
of the season, taking a feed from freshman Leah Geib
(Schwenksville, PA/Souderton) with 25:26 left in the
game.
Geib, along with senior Juli Byrd
(Pocomoke, MD/Pocomoke) added a pair of unassisted goals in
the first half. For Byrd, the goal was her 10th of the
season, tying a career high for goals in a
season.
Elaine Williamson scored the lone goal
for VCU (1-13, 0-3 CAA) 2:14 into the second half. The Rams,
a future Colonial Athletic Association opponent next season
when Delaware begins play in the conference, has dropped
their last 13 games in a row.
Delaware will be in action Tuesday
October 16 taking on Lafayette College in Easton, PA at 3
p.m.
