BURLINGTON, VT -- Playing in rain and
sleet, Juli Byrd recorded her 80th career point and the
University of Delaware came away with a much needed America
East win Sunday, defeating University of Vermont, 2-0, in
field hockey action at A.T. Post Field.
The win snapped a three-game America East
losing skid for the Blue Hens and moved them to 8-4 overall,
3-3 in league action. The win also was the 100th for Carol
Miller as head coach of the Blue Hens.
Vermont fell to 5-7 overall, 2-2 in
America East.
Delaware waisted no time getting on the
scoreboard. The Blue Hens took a 1-0 lead just 2:20 into the
contest when Leah Geib scored off an Erica LaBar
feed.
Delaware stretched the lead to 2-0 with
17:51 left in the first half when senior Juli Byrd scored on
a direct corner with assists from Kelly Coyle and Jenn
Fotiou. The goal was the 35th of Byrd's career, moving the
native of Pocomoke, MD into a tie for No. 8 on the school's
all-time goal scoring list with her sister, Jodi (1995-98).
Juli ranks No. 9 on UD's all-time points list after passing
Jodi on Friday.
For the season, Byrd now has 21 points on
the year, tallying nine goals and three assists. She has
recorded at least one point in eight of the 11 games that
she has played in.
The Blue Hens dominated the game, holding
Vermont without a shot on goal. Stephanie Judefind recorded
the shutout for the Blue Hens. Holly Colberg had eight saves
for Vermont.
Delaware returns home for a match-up with
fifth-ranked Princeton Wedneday at 7 p.m. at Rullo
