Blue Hens Fall to Top-Ranked Terapins

Erica LaBar winds up just before she scored her seventh goal of the season for Delaware

NEWARK, DE -- The No. 14 ranked University of Delaware field hockey team fell to No. 1 Maryland Wednesday night, 3-1, at Rullo Stadium.

Izzy Palmer of Maryland opened the scoring at the 29:23 mark of the first half, converting a penalty corner to give the Terrapins a 1-0 lead heading to halftime.

Maryland extended their lead to 2-0 on the first of two goals by Colleen Barbieri a little more than five minutes into the second half, but Delaware sophomore Erica LaBar (New Castle, DE/William Penn) scored her team-leading seventh goal of the season off a penalty corner to cut the deficit to one. Seniors Kim Wagaman (Oley, PA/Oley Valley Regional) and Kelly Coyle (Lawrenceville, NJ/Lawrenceville) picked up assists on the goal, which was only the third allowed by the Terrapins this season.

Barbieri's second goal at the 54:47 mark capped the scoring for the Terrapins, who improved their record to 7-0 on the season.

Delaware goalkeeper Stephanie Judefind (Wilmington, DE/Concord) stopped six shots, while Kerry Hearsey turned aside five Blue Hen shots.

Labar and sophomore Lauren Carr (West Chester, PA/Downington) each finished with two shots for the Blue Hens, while Kateri Simon notched two assists for Maryland.

The Blue Hens return to action next Wednesday, September 25, when they play host to the Temple Owls. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m.
