Delaware shuts out Villanova 1-0 in first game of Blue Hen Classic

Erica LaBar
NEWARK, DE -- Sophomore forward Erica LaBar scored an unassisted goal 20:45 into the first half to lead the Delaware field hockey team to a 1-0 victory over Villanova University in the first game of the Blue Hen Classic Friday night at Rullo Stadium.

The New Castle, DE native grabbed a loose ball, raced toward the net and beat Wildcat goalkeeper Meghan Helwig for what proved to be the game-winning goal.

Blue Hen goalkeeper Stephanie Judefind (Wilmington, DE) made five saves to notch her second shutout of the season and seventh of her career. Helwig had five saves in a losing effort for Villanova.

The Blue Hen defense allowed only seven shots including holding the Wildcats to only a pair in the second half. Villanova did not get a shot off in the second half until 20:07.

The Blue Hens return to action Sunday afternoon when they take on Richmond in the final game of the Blue Hen Classic at 2 p.m. at Rullo Stadium. Meanwhile, Villanova will take on Richmond tomorrow at 1 p.m at Rullo Stadium.
