NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware field hockey team opened its 2002 season on a high note, defeating long-standing rival West Chester, 2-0, at Rullo Stadium Saturday afternoon.

Sophomore Leah Geib (Schwenksville, PA) opened the scoring for the Blue Hens at the 28:07 mark, taking a pass from senior Kim Wagaman (Oley, PA) and scoring past West Chester goalkeeper Carrie Hanshue.

Sophomore Erica LaBar (New Castle, DE) capped the scoring at 17:31 of the second half off a feed from senior Stacey Thomas (Warrington, PA).

Blue Hen goalkeeper Stephanie Judefind (Wilmington, DE) made one save to earn her sixth career shutout. Hanshue stopped 10 shots in a losing effort.

The win was Delaware's fourth straight over the Golden Rams and their first win in a home opener since 1998. The win also marked the 192nd of UD head coach Carol Miller's career as she moved to 9-2 in season openers at Delaware.

The Blue Hens return to action Sunday afternoon when they take on Duke at 3 p.m. at Rullo Stadium.
