NEWARK, DE -- The University of
Delaware field hockey team opened its 2002 season on a high
note, defeating long-standing rival West Chester, 2-0, at
Rullo Stadium Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore Leah Geib
(Schwenksville, PA) opened the scoring for the Blue Hens
at the 28:07 mark, taking a pass from senior Kim
Wagaman (Oley, PA) and scoring past West Chester
goalkeeper Carrie Hanshue.
Sophomore Erica LaBar (New Castle,
DE) capped the scoring at 17:31 of the second half off a
feed from senior Stacey Thomas (Warrington,
PA).
Blue Hen goalkeeper Stephanie Judefind
(Wilmington, DE) made one save to earn her sixth career
shutout. Hanshue stopped 10 shots in a losing
effort.
The win was Delaware's fourth straight
over the Golden Rams and their first win in a home opener
since 1998. The win also marked the 192nd of UD head
coach Carol Miller's career as she moved to 9-2 in
season openers at Delaware.
The Blue Hens return to action Sunday
afternoon when they take on Duke at 3 p.m. at Rullo
Stadium.
