EVANSTON, IL -- The University of
Delaware field hockey team broke a 1-1 halftime deadlock
with two second half goals 12 minutes apart on the way to a
3-1 non-league victory over Ball State Sunday afternoon at
Northwestern University's Thomas Field.
The Blue Hens, who received votes in last
week's National Field Hockey Coaches Association Top 25
poll, won for the fourth time in their last five outings to
improve to 4-2 on the season. Ball State, which dropped a
3-2 verdict to 19th ranked Northwestern Friday, fell to 3-3
on the season. Delaware will take on Northwestern Monday at
2 p.m.
Delaware opened the scoring just 18
minutes into the game when freshman Katie Evans
scored off a feed from Stephanie Swain on a penalty
corner to give the Hens the 1-0 lead. The goal was Evans'
third of the season.
But the Cardinals came back to knot the
score at halftime when Afton Hess scored on the final play
of the stanza off a penalty corner situation with Becky
Weaver and Kristy Houghton registering the assists.
Delaware, which outshot Ball State 9-3
and held a 9-2 advantage in penalty corners for the game,
dominated the second half. Lauren Carr scored what
proved to be the game winner when she scored an unassisted
goal, her third of the year, with 17:46 left to play.
The Hens added some insurance 12 minutes
later with 5:49 left in the game when Jessica Breault
scored her second goal off the season off an assist from
All-American Erica LaBar.
