NORFOLK, VA -- Jessica Breault
tipped in a ball from Erica LaBar 6:18 into the
second sudden-death overtime period as third-seeded
University of Delaware defeated No. 2 seeded William &
Mary, 2-1, in the semifinal round of the Colonial Athletic
Association Tournament Saturday at Old Dominion's Foreman
Field.
Delaware (14-6) will face top-seeded Old
Dominion on Sunday at 1 p.m. for the CAA Championship. The
winner will receive an automatic berth into the NCAA
Tournament field of 16. It is the second time in three years
that Delaware has advanced to a conference championship
game. Delaware advanced to the 2001 America East title game
by beating Boston University in the semifinals, but lost to
Northeastern in the championship game.
Delaware tied the score with just 41
seconds remaining in regulation when freshman Katie
Evans scored unassisted to knot the score,
1-1.
William & Mary (12-6) had taken a 1-0
lead on its only shot after halftime. Jordan Steele scored
41 seconds into the second half to give the Tribe a 1-0
lead.
However, that is the last shot William
& Mary would have, going the final 50:37 without a shot.
The Tribe was also held without a penalty corner after
halftime.
Breault, a senior from Southbury, CT,
later tipped home the game-winner off a ball hit by LaBar
with 3:42 remaining in the second overtime period. It was
her eighth goal of the season and the 23rd of her
career.
LaBar, a junior from New Castle, DE
(William Penn HS) recorded her 23rd career assist on the
game-winner. She now has 69 career points, tying her for
12th all-time at Delaware.
Delaware snapped a three-game losing skid
against William & Mary, all three of which were one-goal
games.
