Blue Devils Upend
Hens In Rain-Delayed Game
NEWARK, DE -- The University of
Delaware field hockey team fell in its season-opener against
Duke University, 3-1, at the Blue Hen Classic Saturday
afternoon at Rullo Stadium.The game was delayed for two
hours and thirty minutes by rain.
The Blue Devils (1-0) opened the scoring
at the 4:55 mark of the first half, as Katie Grant scored an
unassisted goal. Delaware knotted the score at the 20:53
mark of the half, when junior All-American candidate
Erica LaBar (New Castle, DE) scored off a penalty
corner. Senior Jessica Breault (Southbury, CT) and
junior Leah Geib (Schwenksville, PA) notched assists
on LaBar's 13th career goal.
Johanna Bischof put Duke ahead 2-1 at the
39:55 mark of the game, converting a feed from Hilary Linton
and beating Blue Hen goalkeeper Megan Allen (Virginia
Beach, VA). The Blue Devils added an insurance tally
late, as Chrissie Murphy scored off a pass from Katie Grant.
Allen stopped five Blue Devil shots in
her first collegiate game, while Duke netminder Christy
Morgan posted six saves.
The Blue Hens (0-1) return to action
tomorrow when they take on the Scarlet Knights of Rutgers
University in the final game of the Blue Hen Classic. Game
time is set for 2 p.m.
