Allen's Save On Late Penalty Stroke Gives Hens Fifth Win in a Row

Freshman Megan Allen made five saves, including one on Amy Cordes in the final minute on a penalty stroke.

NEWARK, DE -- Freshman goalkeeper Megan Allen stopped JMU's Amy Cordes on a penalty stroke with thirty seconds left and senior Jessica Breault scored the game-winning goal at 25:00 as the No. 12 University of Delaware field hockey team downed James Madison in its Colonial Athletic Association opener, 2-1, Friday night at Rullo Stadium.

Junior Lauren Carr also scored for the Blue Hens, who improved to 2-1 lifetime against the Dukes (3-9, 0-2) and won for the sixth straight game. Junior Jessi Balmer picked up her second assist of the season on Carr's sixth goal of 2003.

Cordes cut the JMU deficit to 2-1 when she scored at 46:30 off a penalty corner, and was awarded a penalty stroke after a JMU penalty corner shot struck a Blue Hen in the goalmouth area. Cordes' shot was headed into the right corner, but Allen sprawled out and stopped the shot with her stick to preserve the Delaware lead.

Delaware controlled much of the first half, outshooting the Dukes 8-1 before JMU regrouped at the half and took control of the game in the second half. James Madison outshot the Blue Hens (9-2, 1-0), 6-4, after the intermission, but Allen came up with four big saves to keep the Blue Hens ahead. She finished with five for the game, as did Amico.

The game marked the 54th straight contest Delaware has scored at least one goal.

Delaware returns to action Sunday when it hosts Virginia Commonwealth in a CAA matchup. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
