Hens Knock Off No. 19 Ranked Wildcats Behind LaBar's Game-Winner

Erica LaBar

EVANSTON, IL -- University of Delaware junior All-American Erica LaBar scored off a penalty corner with 12:22 left in the first half for what proved to be the game-winner in the Blue Hens' 2-1 non-league field hockey victory over No. 19 Northwestern Monday afternoon at Thomas Field.

LaBar (William Penn/New Castle, DE) scored her team-high fourth goal of the season and the 16th of her career as she took assists from Jessica Breault and Leah Geib off a penalty corner to break a 1-1 tie with 12:22 left before the half. Neither team scored in the second half.

The Hens, who defeated Ball State 2-1 on Sunday at Northwestern, improved to 5-2 with their second straight win and fifth in the last six games. Delaware defeated a top 20 opponent for the third time in the last two seasons and for the first time since a 1-0 win over No. 7 James Madison last October.

Northwestern, which lost for the first time at home this season, fell to 3-2 on the season despite a goal from Katie Walshauser with 22:36 to go before halftime to knot the score at 1-1.

Delaware opened the scoring just two minutes and 30 seconds into the contest on another penalty corner. Freshman Amanda Warrington (Cape Henlopen/Lewes, DE) took a feed from freshman Katie Evans and converted a rebound for her first career goal.

Delaware held 5-4 advantages in both shots and penalty corners.
