NEWARK, DE -- Freshman Katie
Evans (Newtown Square, PA/Villa Maria Academy) scored an
unassisted goal at 56:43 and fellow freshman Megan Allen
(Virginia Beach, VA/Kempsville) made four saves as the
No. 12 University of Delaware field hockey team won its
seventh straight game, downing Virginia Commonwealth, 1-0,
Sunday afternoon in Colonial Athletic Association action at
Rullo Stadium.
The win improved the Blue Hens (10-2) to
2-0 in conference play and upped their all-time record to
3-0 against the Rams (5-6, 1-1). The winning streak is the
team's longest since winning nine straight games back in
1998.
Evans took the ball up the right side of
the field and cut into the crease uncontested, firing a shot
between the left post and VCU goalkeeper Abby Stiles' left
leg. The goal was Evans fifth of the season.
Virginia Commonwealth controlled most of
the first half, but Allen kept the Hens in the game, making
a save on CAA goal leader Jen Howard at 12:42 on a shot off
a penalty corner and on Karlijn Jansen's shot from the top
of the circle at 18:30.
The Blue Hens dominated the second half,
holding the Rams without a shot while also holding a 5-0
advantage in penalty corners. The Blue Hens backliners -
senior Megan Henry (Boyertown, PA/Boyertown), juniors
Leah Geib (Schwenksville, PA/Souderton) and Jessi
Balmer (Telford, PA/Christopher Dock), and freshman
Kaili Kao (State College, PA/State College Area) and
Amanda Warrington (Lewes, DE/Cape Henlopen) - shut
down the VCU offense. For the game, Delaware outshot VCU,
11-5, and owned a 6-0 advantage in penalty
corners.
Delaware returns to action Friday night
when it travels to Williamsburg, VA to take on the Tribe of
William & Mary. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
