NEWARK, DE -- Junior Jessi
Balmer (Telford, PA) posted her first career hat trick
and freshman netminder Megan Allen (Virginia Beach,
VA) made six saves as the University of Delaware field
hockey team downed Villanova, 4-3, at Rullo Stadium Sunday
afternoon.
The win was the third-straight for the
Blue Hens (3-1), who have now scored 14 goals in their first
four games, the first time they have done so since 1998,
when they scored 17.
Balmer scored the game-winner at the
55:17 mark off one of Delaware's 13 penalty corners on the
afternoon. The last Delaware player to score three goals in
a game was Julie Bryd, who did so against Boston University
back on September 28, 2001.
Villanova opened the scoring at the 7:40
mark, as Megan Foster converted a feed from Vanessa Pizzulli
to give the Wildcats (1-2) a 1-0 lead. Delaware answered
right back, as Balmer banged home a loose ball past
goalkeeper Erin Scott. Balmer added goal No. 2 just nine
minutes later, scoring on a penalty stroke to the Blue Hens
a 2-1 halftime lead.
The Hens opened up a two goal lead seven
minutes into the second half when freshman Stephanie
Swain (Middletown, DE) scored at the 41:04 mark, but
Villanova goals by Rory Rogers and Foster in a span of 56
seconds tied the game at three.
Delaware junior All-American candidate
Erica LaBar (New Castle, DE) failed to register a
point for the first time this season, ending her nine-game
regular-season point scoring streak, dating back to last
season.
The Blue Hens return to action this
Thursday when they welcome Pacific to Rullo Stadium. Game
time is set for 6 p.m.
