Field Hockey Over No. 14 Delaware, 5-2, In
NCAA Tournament
COLLEGE
PARK, MD-- (November 13, 2004) University
of Maryland sophomore Paula Infante set
NCAA Championship records with five goals
and 10 points to lead the second-ranked
Terrapins to a 5-2 victory over No. 14
Delaware in the first round of the NCAA
Division I Field Hockey Tournament
Saturday afternoon at the UM Field Hockey
and Lacrosse Complex.
Maryland,
the third seed in the tournament, advances
to the second round for the 10th
consecutive year and will face American
Sunday at 2 p.m. in College Park. American
downed Iowa 2-1 in the other first round
game Saturday.The Terrapins improved to
16-5 this season, while the Blue Hens had
their seven-game winning streak snapped
and ended their season 15-7.
Delaware,
making its third NCAA Tournament
Appearance in school history and the first
since 1988, struck first 12:37 into the
game when sophomore Amanda Warrington
(Lewes, DE/Cape Henlopen - at right)
scored an unassisted goal on a shot from
the top of the circle for her 10th goal of
the season.
However,
Infante tied the game at the 19:18 mark
with a similar goal from the top of the
circle and put the Terrapins on top with
another unassisted goal just 3:45 before
halftime.
Infante
made it a 3-1 game with 25:29 remaining in
the game with her third goal of the
contest, and scored off an assist from
Janneke van Leeuwen on a penalty corner
just four minutes later. She then set new
NCAA Championship records for goals and
points in a game with another unassisted
goal with 9:14 to play.
Delaware
senior Erica LaBar (New Castle, DE/William
Penn) closed the scoring with a shot from
the top of the circle with 1:09 remaining
to post her 11th goal of the season, tying
her for the team lead with fellow senior
Lauren Carr (West Chester,
PA/Downingtown).
The
Terrapins, who needed three late goals to
post a 4-3 comeback win over Delaware in
the teams' regular season meeting, held a
19-5 shot advantage and an 11-5 edge in
penalty corners. Kathryn Masson and
Christina Restivo each did not make a save
while allowing a goal apiece for Maryland,
while Delaware sophomore goalkeeper Megan
Allen (Virginia Beach, VA/Kempsville)
stopped eight shots in the Blue Hen
cage.
Delaware,
which has now lost seven straight to the
Terrapins, finishes its season with 15
wins, tied for fourth-most in a season in
school history and the most since the 1998
team finished 15-6. Last weekend the Blue
Hens knocked off eight-time defending
Colonial Athletic Association champion Old
Dominion in the CAA Tournament semifinals
and defeated Hofstra in the final to claim
the school's first-ever CAA Tournament
title in any sport.
