Delaware Field Hockey Wins Second Straight in Overtime; Defeats California, 2-1

BERKELEY, CA -- Sophomore Molly Burke scored the game winning goal off of a
penalty corner 9:27 into overtime to lead the University of Delaware field hockey team to a 2-1 win over the University of California Sunday afternoon.

The victory was the second overtime win in as many days for the Blue Hens, who have opened the year with two wins for the first time since the 2001 season.

Junior Stephanie Swain gave Delaware the lead just 44 seconds into the game with an unassisted goal. The Golden Bears, playing their season opener, would tie the game on an unassisted goal by Teela Crosthwaite with 11:32 left in regulation.

Megan Allen made six saves and allowed just one goal in the game, while California goalie Veronica Sykes stopped six shots and allowed two goals in the contest.

Delaware out-shot the Golden Bears 19-17, while California held an 8-7 advantage in corners. Burke led Delaware with five shots on the day, while Amanda Warrington and Erin Marihugh each took four shots.

The Blue Hens will conclude their three game road trip with a game Tuesday at Stanford University at 1 p.m. (PT).
