Grant Leads Duke Field Hockey Over Delaware, 7-2, on First Day of
Blue Hen Classic

NEWARK, DE -- Duke University senior Katie Grant scored four goals and added an assist to lead the Blue Devil field hockey team to a 7-2 win over Delaware in the first game of the Blue Hen Classic Saturday afternoon at Rullo Stadium.

Duke, which improved to 3-0 win the victory, struck first 5:58 into the game when Grant scored an unassisted goal, and Nicole Dudek made it a two-goal game when she deflected a shot by Amy Stopford past Blue Hen goalkeeper Megan Allen with 24:53 remaining in the first half.

After Marcy Burns scored an unassisted goal with 15:01 remaining, Grant found Dudek for a goal to give the Blue Devils a 4-0 lead. Freshman Erin Marihugh brought the Blue Hens within three when she collected a rebound and scored the first goal of her collegiate career with 2:26 remaining in the period.

Grant opened the second half scoring with an unassisted goal 7:10 into the half, but Delaware answered when junior Katie Evans scored her first goal of the year off assists from Amanda Warrington and Marihugh on a penalty corner with 5:07 to play. Grant scored off an assist from Julie Tromp on a penalty corner with 2:26 remaining and added an unassisted goal with 42 seconds to go to close the scoring.

Allen made a career-high 10 saves in goal for the Blue Hens, who allowed the most goals in a game since an 8-0 loss to Maryland on September 8, 2000. Caitlin Williams stopped three shots in the first 53 minutes while Christy Morgan also made three saves in the final 17 minutes for the Blue Devils, who improved to 4-0 all-time against Delaware.

In the second game of the day, Ohio State defeated the University of Richmond 3-1. Leticia Fragapane, Lucy Clayton and Yesenia Luces tallied goals for the Buckeyes. while Tara Kelly notched the Spiders’ lone goal of the contest. Lindsay Williams made five saves in goal for Ohio State, while Richmond keeper Michelle Swartz made eight.

The Blue Hen Classic continues Sunday when Duke faces Ohio State at 11:30
a.m. and Delaware hosts Richmond at 2:30 p.m.
