NEWARK, DE -- Melissa Stefaniak scored a hat trick to lead No. 19 James Madison over the University of Delaware field hockey team in Colonial Athletic Association action Sunday afternoon at Fred P. Rullo Stadium.
James Madison took a 1-0 lead 10:05 in the first half on Stefaniak’s unassisted breakaway. Delaware’s Amber Deimler (pictured right) scored her third goal of the season 6:50 later to tie the game at one apiece. Kaili Kao scored off of a pass from Katie Evans with 9:43 left in the first half to give the Blue Hens a 2-1 lead at the half. Evans’ assist marks the 22nd of her career, which places her fourth on the all-time assists list for Delaware.
Stefaniak’s second goal came 12:24 into the second half off of a penalty corner. She finished off the scoring for the Dukes with 9:24 remaining in the half.
Delaware’s Amanda Warrington left the game just four minutes into the first half to get eight stiches. She returned and played in the game midway through the second half.
Delaware keeper Megan Allen made four saves in the loss, while James Madison keeper Lori Amico recorded five saves.
The Blue Hens are now 6-11 overall (1-6 CAA) after losing six straight games, while the Dukes improve to 10-7 overall (4-2 CAA).
Delaware returns to action on Friday, October 28 when the Blue Hens host CAA opponent Drexel for a 7 p.m. game.
