COLLEGE PARK, MD-- The No. 2 University of Maryland field hockey team defeated Delaware, 5-0, in a non-league matchup Sunday afternoon at the University of Maryland Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex.
The Terrapins took control of the game early when Meredith Long scored an unassisted goal 6:53 into the contest, giving Maryland a 1-0 lead. Jackie Ciconte made it a 2-0 lead just before halftime with an unassisted goal with 1:31 remaining.
Susie Rowe scored an unassisted goal 8:56 into the second half to put the Terrapins up 3-0. Emily Beach scored 4:58 later on assists from Tiffany Marsh and Janneke van Leeuwen to give Maryland a 4-0 lead. Kim Ziegler finished the scoring for the Terrapins with 7:26 remaining in the contest off of a pass from Sarah Scholl.
Maryland outshot the Blue Hens, 34-2, and held a 17-1 advantage in penalty corners. Delaware keeper Megan Allen made a career-high 18 saves for the Blue Hens, while Maryland keeper Kathryn Masson made one save in the win.
Maryland holds an 19-10-5 all-time advantage over the Blue Hens, winning the last eight games since Delaware defeated Maryland, 2-1, in 1998.
The Blue Hens fall to 6-9 (1-4 CAA) on the season, while the Terrapins improve to 15-2 overall.
Delaware returns to action on Friday, October 21 when the Blue Hens host CAA opponent Towson for a 7 p.m. game.
