BERKELEY, CA -- Freshman Casey Howard scored two goals in her
collegiate debut, including the game-winner just over three minutes into
overtime, as the University of Delaware field hockey squad opened its
2005 season with a 3-2 win over the University of the Pacific Saturday
afternoon at the University of California.
Howard, an All-State pick last season out of Caesar Rodney High School
(Camden, DE), put the Blue Hens on the board with a goal just four
minutes into the game and won it in overtime as the Hens improved to
1-0. Pacific, which sent the game into overtime with a goal with 10
minutes left in regulation on a penalty shot, fell to 0-1 on the season.
The Blue Hens, who captured the Colonial Athletic Association title and
advanced to the NCAA Tournament a year ago with a 15-7 record, will
continue their three-game swing through California with a game at the
University of California Sunday at 4 p.m. (Eastern time).
Howard, who became the first Delaware player to post a multi-goal game
in her collegiate debut since Lauren Carr accomplished the feat vs.
Pacific in 2001, opened the scoring just 3:56 into the contest with an
unassisted goal. The Tigers tied the game up just over 13 minutes later
when Campos Vianney scored her first of two goals on the day off assists
from Kaily McGrath and Laura Mauger off a penalty corner with 17:25 left
in the first half.
Delaware came back to take a 2-1 lead into halftime when sophomore Molly
Burke (Southbury, CT/Pomperaug) scored on a penalty corner off a feed
from Katie Evans and Amanda Warrington. The goal was the first of her
career.
Pacific came back to the tie game at 2-2 with 10 minutes left in
regulation when Vianney scored her second goal of the game, this time
on a penalty shot past Blue Hen goalkeeper Megan Allen (three saves).
The Hens, who were outshot 12-11 for the contest, then won the game
just 3:03 into the extra session when Howard took a pass from Amber
Deimler and scored past UP goalkeeper Valerie Niles (five saves) for the
game-winner.
