 NEWARK, DE -- Whitney Wells tallied two goals to lead the University of
Richmond field hockey team to a 3-2 win over the University of Delaware in the
fourth game of the Blue Hen Classic Sunday afternoon at Rullo Stadium.
Junior Stephanie Swain scored her third goal of the season 16:35 into the first
half to give the Blue Hens a 1-0 lead, and fellow junior Amanda Warrington
scored off of a reverse sweep with 2:37 remaining in the first half to make it a
two-goal lead.
Whiteny Wells responded for the Spiders in the second half, scoring 8:26 into
the second half and again at the 19:27 mark to tie the game. With 11:52
remaining, Shannon Taylor tallied the game-winning goal off of a penalty corner
with assists from Michelle LaForce and Allie Howard.
Delaware goalie Megan Allen made seven saves, while Richmond keeper Michelle
Swartz stopped five shots. The Spiders outshot the Blue Hens, 18-11, and held a
9-4 advantage in penalty corners.
Richmond improves to 2-2, while Delaware drops to 3-2.
In the first game of the day, the undefeated Duke Blue Devils scored three first
half goals on the way to a 3-1 victory over Ohio State.
Delaware returns to action on Friday when the Blue Hens host Rutgers at 5 p.m.
at Rullo Stadium.
