RICHMOND, VA -- In her first game back from playing on the Under-21 USA Junior World Cup team, Katie Evans scored the game winning goal to lead the University of Delaware field hockey team over Colonial Athletic Association rival Virginia Commonwealth, 2-1 in overtime, Friday evening at Cary Street Field.
VCU’s Nikki Lloyd gave the Rams a 1-0 lead on a pass from Ashley Cadwallador with 7:32 remaining in the first half. Delaware responded to tie the game 1-1 with only 1:08 left in the first half on a goal by Molly Burke with assists from Amber Deimler and Stephanie Swain.
Katie Evans scored the game-winner on a penalty stroke with 3:54 left in the overtime period to lead the Blue Hens to their fifth straight win over VCU.
Delaware keeper Megan Allen made six saves in the win, while VCU keeper Laura Baker recorded one save.
This game marks the 150th win for head coach Carol Miller while at Delaware.
The Blue Hens improve to 6-5 (1-1 CAA) on the season, while the Rams fall to 3-6 (0-2 CAA) overall.
Delaware returns to action on Sunday, October 2 when the Blue Hens host CAA opponent Northeastern for a 1 p.m. game.
